| Ultrasound was invented by the English physician Ian
Donald in 1957 first tested & one year later, was used on a pregnant woman. As technologies improve over the years, so has the ultrasound device. But the
basic concept remains the same. It has let to the development of other useful medical
instrument such as the device CAVITRON (created in 1980) which destroys tumor.
During the World War 2 , there were many research of radar &
sonar which led to the development of the ultrasound device.
Sound waves of very high frequencies can easily and harmlessly
penetrate human flesh. As waves enter the body, they encounter different materials such as
the bone and internal organs. These materials cause the waves to reflect back to the
source. Because the waves reflect back differently, physician can identify the type of
tissue by the nature of the reflection.
Without the invention of the ultrasound device,
doctors wouldnt be able to view the fetus of a woman and even see internal organs
and bones that could in fact save lives or help prevent damages. Also it has led to many
great inventions that is also a great help to humanity. |
