Newcomen, Thomas

Although James Watt is usually credited with inventing the first steam engine, Thomas Newcomen was the first person to actually invent the steam engine. He patented this invention in 1705 as a way to pump water from mines. The next major step was when James Watt invented a far more efficient steam engine with a seperate condenser.
