Fiber optics now form the backbone of many communications systems, both internationally and within cities. Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, and Peter Schultz made fiber optic cables, which are now capable of carrying 50,000 times more information that standard wire, possible. In 1970 they designed the first fiber optic cable which was good enough for wide use. The previous limiting factor was the loss of light during transmission. This discovery was recognized as a breakthrough in high speed communications.
