Help!
I am trying to do a project on installed power plant capacity, and have come up against captive power, measured in kVA. Does anyone know what captive power is, and is kVA equivalent to kW????
Please help!!!

First, kW does not always equal kVA. Because both AC voltage and current are sinusoidal, They can have a phase difference. kW (average power)is calculated by multiplying Vrms, Irms, and the cosine of the angle between them. kVA (apparent Power) ignores the cosine component. When current and voltage are in phase, (cos 0 = 1) kW and kVA are equal. Power companies do their best to keep them in phase. Therefor you could assume that they were equal if you were analyzing numbers from an actual power company.
As far as what Captive power is, I've never heard of it. But it sounds like the amount of power that is capacitively stored. If this is the case, the power stored can be calculated as capacitance times the first dirivitive of the voltage through it. Or a little easier,
W(energy in Joules)= .5*C*V^2.
1 watt = 1 Joule / 1 second.
1 Joule = 6.25 x 10^18 eV(electron volts).
V(volts)=Q(coulumbs)/C(farads).
From there, you should be able to figure out whatever you may need.
