Ten Most Powerful Hurricanes
Even though the list below gives the ten most powerful hurricanes, these are only selected because of their wind speed. It does not mean that these ones were responsible for a high death toll or severe property damage. As a matter of fact, six of the top "people killers" are not even on this list at all. Over the past thirty years, the death toll from hurricanes in the United States has been fairly low. However, property damage from some of these hurricanes have been in the billions of dollars. The low death toll has been attributed to more accurate forecasting and early evacuation from coastal areas.
A high loss of life has been reported in other countries even fairly recently, for example in 1963, hurricane Flora killed eight thousand people in Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
