Practice
Practice? This seams to be every other word out of most music teachers mouths! This word is not as easily defined as it may appear.   How does this one word phrase apply to most students?  Generally speaking their are two specific  items to practice 1; the instrument it self, and 2; the music one is working on.  When your teacher tells you to practice, both should be down.  To practice the instrument scales, chords and various exercises which pertain to your instrument should be accomplished, when that is done the specific piece of music should then be practiced with specific detail to rough spots. This is similar to training for a sport, before practice everyone warms up for a half hour, regardless if it is tennis, wrestling or baseball in similar fashions, then practice of the specific moves to that instrument are practiced.  A good example is wrestling- a wrestling coach will make his team run five miles or so a day, why? obviously no one is running in the ring!! The fact is that the benefits of running will help you wrestle better and add to ones endurance. Scales are like running, everyone must do them-even if the music one is working on does not have them, they will add strength to ones hand and make even slow passages sound that much stronger.  Remember first practice your instrument, then practice your music!
