The truth is that "close enough " doesn't exist. One is either correct or incorrect, if the composition asks for "A" and one plays "A sharp" it's just as wrong as any other note, it may be closer in proximity, but it will never be close enough!!!! In order to make progress in anything, this fact must be understood. I have learned many a piece "close enough" to have it torn to shreds before my eyes. I figured" I got enough of the notes to make it sound passable", and yes to the average listener it is passable, but then so is John Tesh, Yanni and the stuff dentists pump into their studio's, ...like it's not painful enough already!!! Listen, what I'm saying here is the performer must make a commitment to the written page. Many beginners see music as a subjective art, it is not . Music is a calculating, disciplined science such as math. Do you really think your math teacher would accept that excuse, "close enough" ? As you go on to the next level, weather it be high school, college, graduate school,...or the real world, there will be many who will be waiting with baited breath for you to make a mistake so they can rip you apart. In competitions they are known as judges, in life they are critics,.... and in some homes they are known as parents ( just kidding, ...really). The only way to beat them is to play with confidence and conviction. These two attributes only come to those who truly believe in what they are doing, and have put in enough dedicated work to prove it. I will leave you with one final quote , fitting with the spread of Star Wars Fever . In the words of the great green prophet Yoda,"..., do or do not ,there is no try." |
