Stern was borne in Kremenetz, Ukraine, in1920. At the age of one, his family moved to San Francisco, California. He was the first major violinist to be entirely raised in the United States of America. Stern took instruction at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Under the French conductor, Pierre Monteux, at the age of eleven, Stern made his concert debut in the San Francisco Symphony. In 1943, he was engaged in a recital at Carnegie Hall, New York. Henceforth, he was hailed as a master violinist. Further, henceforth, he had an extremely prolific recording career. Beginning in 1948, he has concertised throughout the entire world, including the former Soviet Union and the Far East. His tour of the People's Republic of China was highly acclaimed. It was documented in the film From Mao to Mozart--Isaac Stern in China. Incidentally, the film won an Academy Award in 1982. Further, Stern's dedication to the arts is exemplified by his founding a group of individuals to save Carnegie Hall from demolition. This 1960s group, incidentally, succeeded in their venture, and saved a concert hall that epitomises musical excellence. Isaac Stern is blessed withe good health and remains to this day alive and well.
