(Mary) Leontyne Price
(1927- )

Price was borne in Laurel, Mississippi, in 1927. She received instruction at the Juilliard School, New York City. In 1952, she debuted, in her first professional appearance, in Four Saints in Three Acts by Virgil Thomson. Later that year, she sang Bess in George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Among her many work stations are the San Frncisco Opera Company, the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, Covent Garden in London, and the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York. Since then, in 1985, she has retired from her illustrious career. She is blessed withe good health and remains alive to this date.
