"I am humbled when I
hear of busy doctors, lawyers, office clerks, teachers, society matrons, teenaged boys and
girls on Election Day and quite often since then, standing up to goons, sometimes
armalite-armed, and refusing to surrender ballot boxes, election returns, and our
rights."

"gringo" honasan A staunch nationalist, Sen. Honasan deservedly made his mark not only in his
country as a colorful, multi-awarded military officer whose cause had been made the
stuff of legend but also in other parts of the world, where he lived for quite some
time for the education and training that prepared him to be well-versed and sensitive to
global issues and concerns.
It was in the military
establishment where Sen. Honasan became renowned for his bravery and heroism. Here, he
spent 16 years in active combat duty (1971-1987) that earned him three Gold Cross medals
for gallantry in action in the Battles of Lehak, Jolo and Zamboanga in 1973-74 and
the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for military service in 1985. His
accomplishments as a young officer saw him as one of the countrys earliest anti-drug
fighters when he intercepted a major shipment of heroin worth $ 6.7 million destined for
the United States. His unrelenting campaign against economic saboteurs busted a major
dollar-salting syndicate.
For his pivotal role in the
success of the historic People Power Revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship, Sen.
Honasan was awarded by the Aquino government the Distinguished Conduct Star for the EDSA
Revolution in 1986 and the Presidential Government Medal.
