Veterinary Technician/Assistant
| Duties and Responsibilities: |

Veterinary technicians help veterinarians provide care. This
includes feeding, cleaning, and treating animals. Their duties include
cleaning teeth, securing animals during treatment, shaving and preparing
animals for treatment, taking x-rays, administering medications, and performing
lab tests.
Veterinary assistants perform less technical animal care work.
They feed, wash, and exercise animals. Additionally they may perform
administrative duties. |
Average Salary:
$15,000 - $20,000 (Veterinary Assistants)
$18,000 - $30,000 (Veterinary Technicians) |
| Educational Requirements: |

Students who want to become veterinary technicians or assistants should
take challenging math and science classes in high school. They should
also perform voluntary work in veterninary settings.
Veterinary assistants are usually trained on the job, however some technical
schools and communicty colleges offer short programs.
Veterinary technicians must earn an associate's or bachelor's degree
in the field and pass a written examination to receive a license. |
