Respiratory Therapy Assistant/Aide
| Duties and Responsibilities: |

Respiratory Therapy Assistants or Techicians work with respiratory
therapists in treating patients who have breathing and cardiopulmonary
problems. Their duties include testing patients, operating equipment
to administer gases and drugs, monitoring patients, teaching patients how
to use home equipment, and maintaining records.
Respiratory Therapy Aides have little or no patient contact. They
are responsible for the cleaning, storing, maintaining, and sterilization
of the equipment used in respiratory therapy. In addition they do
much of the record keeping associated with the therapy.
Both respiratory therapy aides and assistants usually work in hospitals
or clinics. |
Average Salary:
$16,000 - $18,000 (Aide)
$18,000 - $25,000 (Assistant-Technician) |
| Educational Requirements: |

Respiratory Therapy Aides must have a high school diploma and their
courses should include English, biology, math, and chemistry. They
are usually trained on the job in hospitals and clinics.
Respiratory Therapy Assistants or Technicians must also have a high
school diploma and have taken English, biology, math, and chemistry courses.
Additionally, they must complete a one year course of study at a technical
school, community college, or hospital and pass a written national examination. |
