Duties and Responsibilities:
Physician assistants are healthcare extenders who work under the direction and supervision of physicians.  They provide routine diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative care.  Many physician assistants work in rural settings, remote health clinics, nursing homes, prisons, rehabilitation centers, and military units under the general direction and supervision of a physician.  Physician assistants duties often include:
  • Taking medical histories.
  • Examining patients.
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays.
  • Making preliminary diagnoses.
  • Treating minor injuries by suturing, splinting, or casting.
Average Salary:  $35,000 - $60,000
Educational Requirements:
A high school diploma with a strong background in biology and chemistry is needed to be accepted into formal, academically accredited physician assistant programs required by most states.

As a minimum, academic physician assistant programs require two years of collegiate-level study in health care, biology, English, chemistry, math, psychology, and social sciences.  Many programs end with an Associate's Degree although some colleges offer Bachelor's and Master's Degree programs.  All physician assistant programs include extensive supervised clinical training.
