| United States of America: |
|
While the United States of America did not actually enter the war until 1941. Under the leadership of President Roosevelt they provided lend-lease aid to Britain. The United States was provoked to enter the war by a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese planes on December 7, 1941. The next day, Congress declared war on the Japanese, and days later on other the Axis powers, thus allying with Great Britain and the USSR. The United States made an increasing contribution to the Allied war effort, culminating in the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the unconditional surrenders of the Axis powers, the U.S. took responsibility to rebuild the war torn nations of the world, regardless of wartime affiliations, constituting the largest reconstruction effort in recorded history. |
