| United Nations: |
| The United Nations is the current prevailing international body of nations of the world. It is based on the concept that all of its members have equal status as far as sovereignty goes. Successor to the League of Nations, the UN was conceived in 1941 at the Newfoundland Conference, and outlined in the Atlantic Charter. The Declaration of United Nations, a more official and widespread version of the Atlantic Charter was first signed in 1942 by the twenty-six nations fighting the Axis powers. Meetings regarding the United Nations were held during the war in Teheran, Dumbarton Oaks estate in Washington D.C., and at Yalta. The organization officially ratified its charter in October, 1945. |
