U-boats:

This is the term used for German submarines, which made up a great deal of Hitler's naval power early in the war. German submarine were very advanced compared to Allied models, with greater range and firepower than their Allied counterparts. In the beginning of the war, the U-boats proved very useful to Nazi blockade efforts but lost their effectiveness as the British navy adapted to counter U-boat tactics.
