| Stalingrad: |
| Stalingrad, presently known as Volgograd, was the site of a major siege battle in Operation Barbarossa. Germany attacked Stalingrad in August 1942. The fighting in Stalingrad was some of the most savage combat of the war. It was not uncommon to see soldiers fighting hand to hand during the battle for the city. Every single building, and nearly every room in those building were contested grounds. Corpses lined the streets. The Soviets launched a successful counterassault in November, and the German army surrendered the following February. Of the 300,000 soldiers launched against Stalingrad by Germany, only 91,000 remained to surrender. This ended the German campaign into Russia, and allowed the USSR to retake much of the land that it lost to Germany. |
