| During World War II, Spain was embattled in a bloody civil war. Francisco Franco, the leader of the Fascist regime, came out victorious due in part to support from Hitler. Although he was indebted to him, Franco never entered the war on the side of the Axis. In fact, as the war started moving in the direction of the Allies, Franco dropped much of his Fascist symbolism, and imprisonment and execution in Spain dropped off dramatically. |
