| George Patton (1885-1945): |
| George Patton was one of the most important U.S. military leaders in World War II. A close friend of Dwight Eisenhower, the two often worked together to carry out the European war effort. He served in World War I, teaching a tank training school and commanding a tank brigade. In World War II he was given command of forces in Morocco and other parts of Africa and was later given command of the Third Army, which was to land at Normandy. He commanded this army swiftly across France, across the Rhine and on to Austria and Bavaria. Following the Allied victory, he was made occupational governor of that territory but was relieved of that position soon after. He died in 1945 in a car accident. |
