| Okinawa Island: |
| Okinawa is located near southwestern Japan, and is the largest of the Ryukyu islands. In April 1945 U.S. forces landed there, staging the last amphibious battle of the war. Okinawa was extremely valuable for its proximity to Japan, its large area, and good natural harbors. Any would-be invasion of Japan would logically be launched from this island. The island was finally secured after 82 days of fierce fighting the U.S. captured the island and took over Japanese holding there. |
