| George Marshall (1880-1959): |
| George Marshall was a very important U.S. military commander. After serving under Gen. John Pershing, he gained considerable recognition, and was promoted to brigadier general in 1936. In 1939, he was appointed army chief of staff, and helped to prepare the U.S. for World War II. He was responsible for deploying and training troops, appointing commanders, and approving strategy on all fronts. He accompanied President Roosevelt at conferences at Casablanca, Teheran, Potsdam, and Yalta. After he retired in 1945, he became the ambassador to China for two years, after which he became Secretary of State, and announced the European Economic Recovery plan, which is also called the Marshall Plan. In 1951 he became Secretary of Defense, and was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his contributions to postwar Europe. |
