Manchuria:

It is arguable that World War II began with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. The Japanese set up a puppet state there, naming in Manchukuo. Manchuria remained under Japanese control until 1945 when it was liberated by the Russians, and was retaken by China in 1949 when the Communists took control.
