| Maginot Line: |
| The Maginot line was a permanent series of cannons set up on the northeastern border of France to repel a German frontal assault. It was constructed as a precautionary measure following World War I. The Maginot Line extended for 200 miles, but proved useless when the Germans bypassed the line entirely, and rumbled across French borders via the forests to the south. The Maginot Line became a symbol of the futility of resisting German advances, as it had miserably failed in the one goal for which it was designed. |
