Leningrad:

Leningrad, also known as Petrograd and Saint Petersburg, was the site of major siege warfare in the USSR in from 1941 to 1944. Leningrad, built by Peter the Great of Russia in the eighteenth century was greatly damaged during the siege, as over 10,000 buildings were destroyed. In addition, about 1.25 million citizens lost their lives defending their city. After the collapse of communism in 1991, Leningrad was officially renamed to Saint Petersburg.
