Iraq: |
| In 1939 Iraq had an alliance with Great Britain, and broke off communications with Germany once the British had declared war. However, as new leadership came to power in 1940, the new government was vehemently pro-Arab and would not support Britain at all. In 1941, a new Axis government was formed. Britain went to war with Iraq, and within one month Iraq signed an armistice with Great Britain, giving the British control of Iraqi infrastructure. By 1942, Iraq was an important supply center for the Allies and was very useful for supplying Soviet forces to the north. In 1943 Iraq became the first Muslim state to declare war on the Axis. |
