Hiroshima, Japan: |
| Hiroshima, located on Honshu, the main Japanese island, was the target of the first atomic weapon to be used offensively. On August 6, 1945, American forces dropped an atomic weapon on the city, killing over 100,000 people and making even more homeless. The blast completely destroyed over two thirds of the city, and greatly damaged most of the remaining areas. After the war, Hiroshima was rebuilt, and today is a growing metropolis, and is the site of an international shrine to peace, dedicated by the Japanese government. |
