Hawaii: |
| Hawaii, which was not a state during the period of World War II, was the site of an American air force installation at Pearl Harbor. This base was made famous on December 7, 1941 when Japanese bombers hit the base with a surprise attack that wiped out most of the forces and personnel stationed there. This action provoked the entrance of the United States into World War II. Hawaii was placed under military control and functioned as the main base of operations for the Pacific. Many Japanese inhabitants of Hawaii were harassed by the military leaders who controlled the islands, and a few were even arrested. However, after the war, the Supreme Court ruled that military control and suspension of inhabitants' rights was unconstitutional. Civilian control was returned to Hawaii in 1944. |
