Greece: |
| After Albania was attacked by Italy, Greece began to feel the threat of an Italian invasion, and joined the Allies, assuring the support France and Great Britain. However, in 1940, Italy attacked, despite the Allied support. However, even before any Allied reinforcements were called upon, the Greek army reversed the direction of the war and pushed Italy back through Albania, conquering much of the land that Italy had occupied. They were stopped only when Hitler sent in German forces to aid the Italians, and Greece was soon forced to sign an armistice with Germany, and German occupation troops entered Greece. A National Socialist government was formed, as King George simultaneously ran a government in London. Following the German occupation, the Greek government fell into turmoil, and the Greek people suffered widespread unemployment and starvation. The National Liberation Front and National Democratic Greek Union began to fight the Germans using guerrilla warfare. The National Liberation Front was estimated as having the support of over 60 percent of the Greek people. As the liberation of Greece became inevitable, these two resistance groups began to fight with each other for power. This fighting continued as Greece was liberated. A coalition government was eventually formed, but tensions were still high. Finally, in 1945, the different groups came to a truce. It was agreed that the political armies would disband, and a non party army would be formed from Greece. Free elections were agreed upon, and Greece became a charter member of the United Nations in 1945. |
