Goring, Hermann (1893-1946): |
| Hermann Goring was Hitler's second in command during World War II, and served as commander in chief of the German air force. He was a pilot in World War I, after which he met Adolf Hitler and joined the Nazi party. He soon became a leader in that organization, and participated in the Munich Beer Hall Putsch. Following a four year exile, he was elected to the Reichstag and was president of the legislature by 1932. He became the commander of the German air force when Hitler came to power in 1933, and during the war he was responsible for the close coordination between air and ground forces that led to swift victories in countries such as Poland, Belgium, and France. He was captured in 1945, and was scheduled to be executed following war crimes trials. He poisoned himself in 1946, before he could be executed. |
