Finland: |
| Finland, at the beginning of World War II, proclaimed neutrality, but was attacked by the USSR for strategic reasons in 1939, and were soon defeated, despite early victories. In June, 1941, when Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the USSR, over 70,000 German troops were operating out of Finland. For this reason, the USSR bombed many areas in Finnish territory. This prompted the Finnish government to declare war on the USSR in that year. Great Britain declared war on Finland, and the United States would not have relations with them. Finland was considered belligerent until 1944 when an armistice was signed in December, granting a lease of certain Finnish lands to the Soviets. |
