El Alamein, Battle of:

This battle was the decisive battle for the Allies in Africa in October of 1942. Having been pushed back by Rommel's Afrika Korps, General Montgomery's armies held the lines when it appeared to Axis leaders that victory was imminent. Montgomery launched a surprise counter offensive utilizing the British air force to neutralize Rommel's tanks. Rommel warned that the North African campaign was headed towards failure, but was ignored by Hitler and his advisors. The battle cost tens of thousands of lives, and was the turning point of the African war. After El Alamein, almost all Allied operations in North Africa proved to be successful.
