Dunkerque, France: |
| Dunkerque, France was the site of the largest sea evacuation in military history. As German forces pummeled Allied defenses in France in 1940, over 300,000 troops were forced onto the beaches at Dunkerque. As the Germans approached, it was clear that if they did not retreat, they would be annihilated. Every available vessel near the English Channel was ordered to Dunkerque, and almost every soldier on the beach was evacuated by naval and civilian vessels, while under constant fire from German forces. |
