Casablanca Conference: |
| This conference, held in January 1943 between Great Britain and the United States was held to determine exactly how a Western European attack should be conducted. American military leaders supported an assault across the English Channel, but Winston Churchill urged against this, favoring an attack through the Mediterranean Sea and up through Italy. Roosevelt supported Churchill, but to appease his military leaders he promised that no new forces would be sent to the Mediterranean, but rather to Great Britain to prepare for a cross-channel attack. In addition to discussing strategy at this conference, Churchill and Roosevelt both agreed that they would fight Germany until unconditional surrender was achieved. |
