Canada began the war much as the U.S. did, simply giving the Allies economic support. However, by the end of 1940, Canadians realized that they would have to go to a full-scale war following the defeat of France. Domestic prices were regulated, and a rations system was implemented. Also over 1 million Canadians were drafted out of a population of 12 million people. World War II helped to bring Canada out of its economic slump, and set the stage for massive peacetime changes that helped to make Canada prosperous.
