Britain, Battle of: |
| The Battle of Britain is the name given to Hitler's attempt at conquering Great Britain in 1940, following his June 25 armistice with France. In August 1940 Hitler deployed daylight bombing raids to draw out British fighters to destroy them, but he did not count on the British inventing radar, which greatly increased their fighter effectiveness. In addition, the British Spitfire fighters were better than almost all of the fighters in Hitler's air force. Hitler's forces sustained heavy losses, and since he did not wish to attempt to land an invasion force with the British air force intact. He admitted defeat on September 17, 1940, acknowledging a British victory in the Battle of Britain. |
