Belgium: |
| Having been attacked in World War I by Germany for its strategic significance as a base for attacking both France and Britain, Belgium was again aggressed upon in World War II, when the Nazis invaded Belgium in May 1940. Allied assistance proved futile, and the Belgian king surrendered unconditionally. However, his decision was not supported by the cabinet or the parliament, and these two bodies stripped him of all governmental power. The Belgian government then relocated to London until 1944 when it returned to Brussels. |
