Australia: |
| Australia is an island nation located in the South Pacific. During World War II, Australia was an important Allied member nation. When Great Britain went to war in 1939, Australia sent its armed forces to Europe to aid in the fighting. However, by 1941 it was clear that the Japanese expansion plans were to include Australia, and they decided to join with the United States to protect their homeland. Before Douglas MacArthur was able to liberate the Philippines, he used Australia as a base for American Pacific operations. Australia quickly industrialized their economy for war, and these industries carried over into the postwar era, strengthening the Australian economy. After the war, Australia entered into the ANZUS pact with New Zealand and the United States for mutual protection and would later go on to become a charter member of the United Nations. |
