Algeria: |
| Algeria is a North African nation on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. In World War II, Algeria was occupied by the Afrika Korps and its Italian equivalent until 1942. Operation Torch, the code name for the Allied campaign in North Africa, was conceived in order to liberate Algeria, as well as its North African neighbors such as Morocco. Almost 49,000 Americans were sent to Algeria to retake the country. Led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the transport of troops and equipment went almost perfectly, with only light combat at Casablanca and Oran. By 1943, Eisenhower had liberated Algeria and was on his way to Sicily. |
