HTML, Dynamic HTML, JavaScript

HTML
We used HTML on all the pages throughout the site. HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, is the language used to create pages for the World Wide Web. Many techniques and tags were employed to help us achieve the look and layout of our page.

Dynamic HTML
Dynamic HTML is a relative newcomer to the Web scene. Introduced by Netscape and Microsoft in the 4.0 browsers, it allows for greater interactivity and scriptability. We used Dynamic HTML on the splash or entrance page to our site. Layers were used to animate the elements. Dynamic HTML enabled us to define the animation of the layers and the paths they were to follow. Dynamic HTML allowed us to keep the file size low by using regular text elements instead of one large animated GIF. It was also used on the Interactive page and used to make the puzzle game.

JavaScript
JavaScript, another scripting language somewhat similar to Dynamic HTML, allows for flashy rollover effects for graphics as well as more practical uses in browser detection and drop-down menus. For the Astronomy Interactive Network, JavaScript was used for all of the rollover graphics that change from one image to another as the mouse passes over them, the drop down menus on the home page and some of the others, as well as browser detection to decide which version of a page to serve. On the home page, JavaScript was used for the recommendation form for our site. JavaScript is one of the most powerful scripting languages available for the Web and helped us greatly.

The Astronomy Interactive Network is a web site for the 1998 Thinkquest contest created by Rand, Noah and Kim.
