What is it like, being deaf in a world full
of hearing people?
"What is it like to
'hear' a hand?"
The world is full of people. Some people are
hearing; some people are deaf. Some people are tall; some people
are short. Some people speak English; some speak Spanish; some
speak Chinese; some speak American Sign Language; some speak
Arabic.
People all have differences, even identical
twins. The key to getting along together is understanding one
another, even with the differences.
Deaf people are just like other people
except for one thing: they can't hear. Some can't hear at all.
Others can hear some things, but can't hear well or clearly. Being
unable to hear sometimes causes problems for deaf people. But the
biggest problem that confronts the Deaf is the ignorance of hearing
people about deafness.
We'd like to change that. The purpose of our
web site is to teach hearing people about the Deaf, about the
challenges of deafness. We hope to give hearing people insight into
the world of the Deaf and the Deaf community in
America.
