Believe it or not, the Sun is just a star, just like all the other ones we see twinkling in the sky at night. The reason the Sun seems different to us is because it so much closer to us so it looks bigger and brighter.
Compared to all the other stars in the universe the Sun is actually quite average. Many stars are smaller than the Sun and many are quite a bit larger. Some stars are hotter than the Sun while others are cooler. Because of it's size and color, the Sun is called a yellow dwarf. There are all sorts of names for stars. Some stars that are brighter and hotter than the Sun are called blue stars, red stars are dimmer than our Sun, and a white dwarf star is dimmer still and only about the size of the Earth.
