I wanted to tell you a story about a very serious incident involving sunscreen. Our whole family uses sunscreen, but when I had a 2 year old, using waterproof sunscreen gave me a real scare. I don't know how it happened, but he got some in his eyes, most likely from his hands. He just started screaming!! So I tried to flush it out with water. But that didn't work because the sunscreen was waterproof. So I just held him and let him cry, thinking the salty tears would flush it all out. But it got worse, so I called the poison control center. They told me to rush him to the ER for treatment immediately. The ER personnel didn't waste a second. They flushed his eyes out with special solvents. And I found out for the first time that MANY kids each year lose their sight to waterproof sunscreen. It burns the eyes and they lose complete sight! I was appalled that the medication we use to keep our kids safe from skin cancer can blind them. My son did go blind for 2 days. It was horrible. So please be careful!!! Don't stop using it - just make sure your kids don't touch their eyes for at least 15 minutes after you put it on. Please remember that we have included this copy of the email we received so that you may protect your children from the harmful effects from the Sun but also from potential harm from sunscreens.
