Horus was the name given to the Falcon-god of the Nile valley invaders. Horus is the Latin form of the Egyptian word hor (which means face). At first the invaders falcon-god was a sky god with the Sun and moon being his eyes. Throughout time the falcon went from being the emblem of a conquering people to a warrior-god and a victorious leader. Soon this evolved into the belief that the king was his (the falcon-god) body on Earth. Later on this turned into dogma and the kings took Horus as one of their own names.
During that same time, the kings were followers of Ra (or also called Re) which caused Horus to become identified with the Sun. Also at this time Horus started to become known as Horus the son of Osiris. The two Ho rus' are quite different and in later times the solar Horus and the Osirian god were confused. The resolution of the confusion differs from the different cults so as a result 15 different Horus gods can be identified. These can be divided into two groups, Solar and Osirian. This depends on the parentage of Horus as told in the myths. If Horus was the son of Atum, Ra (Re), Geb or Nut in the myth then he is solar. The myths in which he is the son of Isis are Osirian. In this web site we will discuss the solar forms of Horus.
