1868-1917 - A native Texan, Joplin Thelonious Monk popularized the
early form of ragtime in jazz. He was a composer and pianist. His work on “The Maple Leaf Rag” in 1899 became an instant hit. His other works include several rags (thirty-three to be exact), twenty-four songs and a ragtime opera.
