1920-Present - A pianist, and a composer, Lewis was originally from Illinois. He applied classical forms into jazz which
were based on improvisation and changes in tempo, key, and meter. John Lewis was one of the pioneers of cool jazz and invented the modern jazz quartet. Some of his noteworthy works are: “Bluesology” which was composed in 1956 and “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” which was written in 1957.
