1899-1974 - Born in Washington D.C., Duke Ellington was a pianist, composer and bandleader.
Ellington wrote and arranged many popular songs, including classic jazz, and blue music. These included Mood Indigo(1930), It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) (1932), Sophisticated Lady (1933), and In a Sentimental Mood (1935). He was nominated for the Pulitzer prize and is now considered the most important composer of big band music.
