Scott Joplin was dubbed the king of ragtime during his height in the 1900s. His ragtime pieces include many for the piano such as "The Entertainer" which has been played throughout circuses, television commercials and outdoor events. It was "The Entertainer" that gave Scott Joplin his fame. Ragtime was renewed in the 1970s because of Joplin's music.
In the early twentieth century, Joplin created the academy-award-winning score for the movie "The Sting". Born in Bowie, Texas on November 24th, 1868, Scott Joplin also created and extended ragtime to encompass ballet music. In 1907, after he had moved to New York, Scott Joplin wrote "The School of Ragtime" which explained all his musical ideas - from sycopation and breaks to harmonic ideas and patterns. Soon thereafter, Joplin became obsessed with opera music to the point where he had to be institutionalized. He died in 1917 in a mental hospital.
