His family wanting him to be a lawyer, Peter enrolled in the School of Law in St. Petersburg in 1850. In 1859, after graduating, Tchaikovsky became a clerk in the Ministry of Justice. However, Tchaikovsky was also interested in music and after studying with Anton Rubinstein, he became a music teacher at the Moscow Conservatory.
It was during these years that Tchaikovsky composed some of his masterpieces including “Swan Lake” and “Romeo and Juliet”. In addition, he composed the ever popular “Piano Concerto #1”.
Although his music was ill-received at first, soon a patron by the name of Nadezhda von Meck began paying him for his music as contributions. Shortly after his disastrous marriage to Antonina Milyukova, von Meck started paying Tchaikovsky a yearly salary. This allowed Tchaikovsky to give up his teaching at the Moscow Conservatory and focus on his music composition. In 1891, Tchaikovsky went on a tour to the United States. Upon his return, he composed the now widely known “Nutcracker Suite”. The 1890s, Tchaikovsky contracted cholera and died because of this terrible disease on November 6th, 1893.
