Beethoven was the bridge that crossed the river between the previous classical era to the newer Romantic period. While his predecessor, Mozart seemed to create music with ease, Beethoven always had to strive to make what he thought was impeccable music. It is unknown when Beethoven was born. When he was young, Beethoven learned piano, violin, French horn and before he was twelve years old, he began court organist. Ludwig studied music composition extensively with Christian Gottlob Neefe. Later, he studied briefly with Mozart. Still after, he moved to Vienna to study with Haydn and Salieri.
Beethoven had an astonishingly excellent skill at improvisation
which he demonstrated on March 29th, 1795 - his first public appearance in Vienna. Soon, he had may patrons, some aristocratic which showed their sponsorships. By the late 1700s, Beethoven grew progressively deaf. By 1800, Beethoven realized that his condition was not only permanent but getting worse.

Therefore, he wrote “Heiligenstadt Testament” in which he wrote to his two brothers of his despondency and shame. By 1819, his deafness became total and he had to ask conversations to write down their comments while he replied orally. Beethoven never married and he lived in various small villages near Vienna. He would take long walks and write his musical ideas. Later found, these sketches depicted an agonizingly protracted method of perfecting, reorganizing and redrawing his musical pieces.
Beethoven’s music can be separated into three different periods. During the first period, which
lasted about 1790 to 1800, Beethoven created notable classical work. Influences of his teachers Mozart and Haydn are present in his first symphonies and concertos. Although he added some “Beethoven flavors”, such as sudden and drastic changes in dynamics, Beethoven’s first pieces of music were mostly in the classical gusto.
The second period, from 1801 to 1815 was characterized by his improvised work such as Symphony #3 and Piano Concerto #4. The last period, until his death in 1827 was characterized by newly invented styles that have been uniquely classified as Beethoven’s. The last of his string quartets depict many of his newer and unprecedented musical ideas. His works include painstakingly-created nine symphonies, thirty-two piano sonatas, seventeen string quartets, one opera - “Fidelio”, five piano concertos and other chamber music.
