Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg, Germany on May 7th, 1833. He starting taking piano lessons at the age of seven. By the age of thirteen, he had mastered music theory. He gave his first

formal concert at age fifteen. By age twenty, in 1853, Brahms went on tour with violinist Eduard Remenyi. On the tour, he met the famous violinist Joseph Joachim. Joachim introduced Brahms to Robert and Clara Schumann. The composer and pianist praised Brahms for playing their compositions so well.
By an article written by Schumann, Brahms became know throughout Europe. As
fame spread, Brahms concentrated more on composing music than performing it. One of the few composers whose work was known during his lifetime, Brahms also was music director at the German court Lippe-Detmold. He also became a conductor of the Choral Academy in Vienna.
Brahm's "German Requiem" which was dedicated to his mother was one of his first compositions that brought him fame. Brahms composed more than three hundred chamber music, piano music, orchetral and even choral work. He died on April 3rd, 1897.
